Forget putting their best foot forward, the Chinese government refuse to put anything but their best faces forward. Remember the little girl who sang at the Opening Ceremony bringing tears to us all? Turns out she didn't sing anything at all – a decision was made that the real singer (pictured on the right) wasn't cute enough so they got a stand in who 'better embodied' the Chinese ideal. A Chinese official said, "The main consideration was the national interest. The child on the screen should be flawless in image, in her internal feelings, and in her expression."
How do you explain that to a parent??
"Excuse me sir, your daughter.." "Which one?" "You know the one, the unattractive one who sings." "What about her?" "She's not quite what we're looking for in a performer. But don't worry, she can still sing the song, we'll just get a cuter girl to pretend to sing it. It's a great honour." "Oh...well...um..ok then, as long as it's a great honour.." "It is."
