Two days ago Karen Walker presented The Believers, her Spring 09 collection at New York Fashion Week. Isaac sent Karen an email to see if he could get a bit of sneaky information, but she wasn’t giving anything away:
hi isaac
i'm afraid you're going to have to wait for news re the silhouettes etc. only 6 hours 'til showtime! i can tell you though the inspiration: cults, communes and religious sects. with a little but of voodoo thrown in there too.
k

One thing in the show particularly grabbed my attention, but the cult it conjured in my mind wasn’t religious, it was literary. The extra-extra tall straw hats pulled low over the model's eyes reminded me of Puddleglum the Marsh-Wiggle from C.S. Lewis’ The Silver Chair. I imagine him sitting around a damp fire with the pretty girls, smoking long, thin pipes outside his Wig Wam (a tee pee similarly shaped to the hats). As a literary character renowned for his pessimism, perhaps this is an artistic jab at the overall economic doom and gloom in the world right now. Yes, fashion and economics mix well.
Along with the unconventional hats, I loved the cropped beige trousers, beautiful royal blues and oriental silk print. Check out the collection for yourself at style.com
