#166 Air New Zealand Fashion Week Opens, and I Met Helen Clark

Air New Zealand Fashion Week was officially opened tonight by the Right Honourable Helen Clark, our fair nation's Prime Minister (pictured with me above). Look at me, I'm all excited like a school boy!

Auckland's Mayor John Banks got on the mic first – and the former National MP didn't miss a chance to poke a bit of fun at Helen Clark: "It's interesting that the same week the Prime Minister opens Fashion Week, she also announced the election. She certainly understands fashion as we can see from the outfit she's wearing in her new billboard on Sandringham Road."

After the blue-Mayor had finished, Rob Fyfe got up to announce this year's winners of the Export Growth Awards. This is the fifth year (and final year of the current contract) that Air New Zealand has been the name sponsor of Fashion Week, and many people are saying that they won't come back on board next year. Quite contradictingly though, Fyfe spoke about the importance of sponsorship and how, as a small airline from a small country, Air New Zealand wins by alligning themselves with the creative industries.

The happy winners of the Export Growth Awards were Margi Robertson from Nom*D and Cybele Wiren from Cybele, both of whom got a bit teary-eyed in their acceptance speeches, and, in true New Zealand style, thanked everyone who worked with them on their labels. We certainly breed modesty down here.

But the real winner on the day was our favourite lady in red, Helen Clarke. In her dulcit tones she announced, "I'm a very loyal buyer of New Zealand fashion and I'm proud to wear it everywhere I travel because it's world class. The fashion industry brings in a tidy amount of revenue – one third of a billion dollars. A nation that's known for its fashion is a nation with style and sophisticated ideas."

I wonder if we can expect to see our lady Helen in the front rows of World tomorrow morning?? Only time will tell...
