#173 Nom*D

Remember a couple of seasons ago when Nom*D did those tee shirts with the nuclear bomb prints? Well it was a pre-emptive strike. Bedlam just blew everybody else out of the water and I'm still waiting for the fall out.

The first model, (Stacey Grant I believe), stalked down the catwalk with ratty, unwashed hair covering half her face a la that little girl from The Ring. I half expected her to stare, point at the cameras and whisper "Seven Daysssssss..." There was something of the horror movie in the whole collection, themed around patients at a 70s English mental institution that the wealthy could watch for entertainment.

Hailing from Dunedin, layering is always key to the Nom*D aesthetic - it gets pretty cold down there - and tonight's outing was no exception. Only this time the outfits were thrown together as if a small child (or a crazy person) had gotten dressed in the dark - mismatched socks, three shirts/blazers/knitted tops thrown on - all in an attempt at normalcy. But there was also a sinister attempt from the institution at putting their best foot forward - the more standard pieces in the collection were knotted tightly around the body like straight jackets - there was no getting out.

Breaking out was a strong motif in the girl's outfits with blazers barely concealing their breasts, as if to say to the guards, "let me out, and I'll let you in..." There was definitely evidence of a bodily fluid break out in the blood red and bile green Nikes worn by all - we all know how bad hospital food can get.

If any show tops Nom*D this week, I'll be astounded. ASTOUNDED!!

I had a talk with the show's stylist Karen Inderbitzen Waller (pictured above left with Melinda Williams).
Me: "That was incredible! Holy moly how did you do it??"
Karen: "I think the theme really worked for me - I'm a bit of a head case myself so styling it came naturally! (Laughs.)"
Me: "Do you think you can repeat the success again tomorrow night with Stolen Girlfriends Club?"
Karen: "I hope I can, they've designed a really big, really beautiful collection so I've got lots to work with and I've been whipping those boys into shape so it's looking pretty good."
Me: "And what have you thought about the other shows?"
Karen: "I've been too busy to go to anything else but me, Melinda and Margi (of Nom*D) just tried to watch Hailwood and didn't get let in!"

About the show: Dark, dreary and disturbed. Sorry, but I hated it. Yeah, it's all a matter of taste. But, this show definitely was not my cup of tea.
