#292 Stenbeck & Morse shutting up shop, but every cloud has a silver lining

More bad news from the New Zealand fashion retail sector, Newmarket based store Stenbeck & Morse will close their doors for good this Thursday. The high end retailer, established by Charlotte Morse in 2007, stocks a mix of New Zealand and international labels, including Alexandra Owen, Cybele, Trelise Cooper, Josh Goot, Jaeha, Jimmy D and Romance Was Born.

I gave Morse a call this afternoon to ask the reasons behind the shutdown.

"It's a very sad thing, and it's a sign of the times. But there is a silver lining in that Jimmy D is opening a store."

When did you make the decision to close down?
Last week.

It's just been too difficult?
Yeah. It's just that thing and from what everyone is saying, this year coming up is going to be a really tough one in retail. I think it's a good time to get out if you're not in a position to ride through it. I've been in retail for about fifteen years, so time for something new!

What do you think you will do?
No idea. Hang out with my son for a bit, and decide what I want to be when I grow up!

Will you be having a massive clearance sale?
That's on at the moment. I was going to finish today, but it's actually till Thursday. Everything's on sale, including the store fittings.

Bargain hunters check out Stenbeck & Morse, situated at 11 Teed Street, Newmarket, Auckland. Phone +64 9 520 2110

Pity these guys are shutting down, but I can't wait for Jimmy D's store to open. He is such a fashion visionary.

I agree. I've always wanted to be able to wear tight, shiny, black pants as well as he does.
