#300 She's Cracked - Karen Walker at NYFW

With economic prospects so grim right now, Karen Walker's new collection, She's Cracked, offered a colour palette to match the mood. Greys featured in almost all the outfits; in jackets, pants, tee shirt dresses and leggings. As always, I'm a sucker for girls in male inspired tailoring (maybe it's just my insatiable desire to wear the clothes), so highlights for me came in the form of grey flannel pleated pants, the grey tweed jackets (above), and the beige pants/leather bomber combo (below).

Walker pulled one out of the archives with the almost ten year old broken pearl strand print (above), presumably a metaphor for the catastrophes afoot right now. After all, what greater catastrophe is there than a lady losing her pearls? (It's like a man losing his marbles.) More subdued was the hat selection. Unlike last season with the hugely oversized Wigwam hats, Walker reared in the head gear with little bucket hats pulled low over the models' eyes.

The other major print came in the form of a mashup of broken plates, featured in two different colourways, rusty browns and soft blues (above). "We love the beauty that comes out of catastrophe," Walker told style.com backstage, "and the brittle nature of things."

Brittle nature be damned. I just want that bomber in men's.
