#362 Get this look at a super cheap price! He did, literally

You know the old saying, if you've got it flaunt it, if you ain't got it, TAKE TAKE TAKE what's rightfully yours! This 17 year old boy from New York City, just profiled in New York Magazine, has been five-finger-discounting his way to a fashionista's dream wardrobe. Is it the adrenaline rush? The excitement? The sense of satisfaction of a job well done? No. Kevahn Thorpe is so obsessed with high end designer fashion that despite the numerous arrests, the bannings from shops and the trips up to juvenile delinquent centres, he just keeps on stealing.

And it's gotten so bad, that's he's now been sent away to prison for a one to three year sentence.

New York Magazine - from Kevahn Thorpe's Myspace page

It all started after an interest in designer clothing took him to a 5th Ave department store. In his words:
"I experimented and took this Comme des Garçons shirt...I was just testing, like, how easy it is. That was my first high-class shirt I took. Then me and my brother went to Bergdorf Goodman, and we stole vintage Ralph Lauren polos-and that's the hardest store to steal from. The next day, we went to Barneys again, and we took some 7 for All Mankind jeans. And I went in Bergdorf Goodman and stole a navy-blue Gucci V-neck T-shirt, and then I was like, Damn, I need a pair of shoes with these, so I went right to Prada and I crafted-I took those lavender patent-leather Pradas."

But it didn't end there. Thorpe revelled in the newfound attention his $1000 plus outfits started getting him. He started cataloguing all his thefts on his Myspace page (see picture above), taking photographs of the Gucci and Prada shoes, the Fendi glasses, the Dior Homme jeans. Despite being sent up to Rikers Island (New York City's Prison facility) countless times, and being given warning after warning, last chance after last chance, he just kept on going. Trips to eyewear stores meant five new pairs of frames, a visit to Apple meant two new iPhones, four iPods and a Bose soundsystem. Sometimes he'd steal credit cards and go and buy thousands of dollars worth of clothes and shoes outright, inevitably getting caught in the process.

Finally the judge had no choice but to send him away. He is now serving time in an upstate prison and will be out within one to three years. What'll happen when he gets out? More stealing, or a career in fashion. Most likely the latter – we all know how much the fashion industry loves stuff like this. Remember Winona Ryder for Marc Jacobs?

Without getting too sentimental, what the hell is wrong with this world of ours!?

strangely enough the last pic of him in the jumpsuit looks like it was taken by juergen teller.

Ugh, I feel sick now. This is really sad. I guess on the bright side he's committing "victimless" crime and no one's getting carved up...

The kid's either a classic kleptomaniac, and needs treatment, or he's just another victim of consumer culture.

I happen to know of some "professional" shoplifters and it's amazing what they can, and do, get away with at times. However, for all their ill gotten gains, they're never truly satisfied; It's like a never ending hunger for them. And, I can't imagine living like that nor would I want to.
