#369 NZ's Next Top Model Episode 2 - Recap

NZNTM screengrab - TV3

First things first. Let me begin with a new weekly New Zealand's Next Top Model section I'm going to call Modelisms. A Modelism is a quintessentially cliche (read: mouth droppingly stupid) comment or statement made by one of the models. This week's Modelism involves a number of the girls – Hosanna, Rebecca Rose and Laura, but Laura was the clear perpetrator...
Hosanna: "What did the Saramail say?"
Rebecca Rose: "Something about wings."
Laura: "Oh! Imagine if we're working with helicopters!"

'Nuff said.

In this episode we went to the MAX store on Queen St to see which of the girls could dress themselves. Christobelle easily pulled the best look, but had a wardrobe malfunction with a pair of jeans getting stuck on her heels. Teryl-Leigh, the challenge winner, pulled a look that reminded me of a primary school teacher, but her explanation for each garment and accessory was clear and concise (much like a primary school teacher) which impressed the judges and won her and two friends spots in the new MAX Merino campaign. She picked Ajoh and Sarah; both models with prior experience, both wild card entries. Ajoh is the only girl of any real colour in the show, and Sarah is a reformed drug addict, mother of one and suffers from epilepsy.

I was utterly unconvinced by Sarah in the first episode and thought the producers were keeping her on for drama purposes (we all love a good onscreen vom every now and again), but after watching her in the wind tunnel challenge, I've decided I really like her face. And her body. After all this is a modelling competition people, so bodies are incredibly important. And Sarah looks to have one of the skinniest.

This week's major challenge saw the girls down at the local aerodrome in a Jean Batten shoot with the South African born, NZ based photographer Jackie Meiring. This shoot screamed of the Air NZ Fashion Week campaign last year... I wouldn't be surprised if they took direct inspiration from that, but then again, maybe they're just basing their challenges around inspirational and strong New Zealand females... When's the Helen Clark challenge coming?

The shoot on the wing of the plane polarised the girls, separating the models from the nons. Despite her Modelism, Laura stood out in the challenge, delivering a tidy little pose and photo. Christobelle could do no wrong in Chris Sisarich's eyes, and Rhiannon could do no right. It was Tiffany who got the biggest reaction though, and according to Jackie Meiring, she "worked that plane like a pole". Better a girl who moves than a girl who stands their stiffer than a plank of wood.

When it came time for the judging and Sara Tetro told Tiffany what Meiring had said, Tiffany responded, saying, "It's not me, I resent that comment". She got axed. It just goes to show, if you wanna stay in the game, don't backchat the ref.

Of the girls so far I would rate them in this order: Victoria, Tiffany (who got kicked off - bad bad choice judges!), Christobelle, Sarah, Laura, Teryl-Leigh. I wasn't sure about Teryl Leigh either until I saw her in makeup with hair pulled off her face. Great face. A little dramatic side story is getting pitched around about the sisterhood rivalry between Lucy and Olivia, but I think drama is all those two will bring to the show, they don't look much like models to me.

If it had been up to me I would have chosen Rhiannon to get axed, she might have a pretty face, but as she said herself, she doesn't feel comfortable in her own skin.

Can't wait for the dramas to start happening next week, when Ajoh goes on the offensive claiming racism in the camp. That plus a nu-rave Supre style catwalk challenge with slogan tees and a bit of C-Walking on the runway will make for a plenty exciting show.

What does everybody think??

My favourite modelism: (in reference to the shoot) It'd be great to do it with animals!

Also loved the description of someone (Hosanna?) scrambling up the plane "like a spider". She should have gone home instead of Tiffany.

Funny you comment the shoot was similar to the Fashion Week campaign. Chris Lorimer, the stylist credited with the shoot last night also did that campaign, I believe. Did anyone else notice he used the same Zambesi buster was it 3 or 4 times? Lazy much?

I can't believe a beautiful and articulate girl with delicious features *that aren't the result of a horrifying disease* got kicked.

Still cracking up at SARA MAIL!!!

Completely agree with you about the drama, Epilepsy, sibling rivalry, personally I don't think it makes for a good show, and when they straight up compared Lucy and Olivia in Max it was shocking!! Sure the sisters are OK models but there must be girls out there that could have been in their places that want it so much more and are willing to work so much harder. I just realised I am now grouping those two together, see what it has done?! I wish the show would focus more on the raw modeling, if the producers would have picked ambitious young things truly wanting to be NZNTM the drama would have followed anyway to make for a "good show", there hasn't been enough of "I want it more than her!" talk and straight out competition e.t.c. Also agree with you on the make-up, they did a fab job making them all look fairly uniform so the models could really play it out in order to see who was the stand out girl.
P.S I strongly believe Hosanna should have been sent home, SO incredibly annoyed at that.

Just my opinion on the show :)

Ok...so clearly Christobelle is a sure win, Ajoi is too experienced and shouldnt be there, Rebecca Rose is a lollipop with a mouth like Mr Ed she'd never make it overseas and has probaly stuffed herself here , Terry Leigh needs to go back to the Burbs and look after her kids shes too old anyway,The finalists are average,a bit disappointing for the hype, and Colin needs to ease off the eyeliner and stop pretending he's an international model. The productions not bad but the cast is a bit tragic.

hey hey hey - is this not supposed to be Issac Likes not lets all rip people to pieces!?!

Well said. NZ is an editorial market and the already models on the show have done no favours because theyve put themselves into a commercial reality show. Christobelle could do ok because shes new and fresh in tne very least she can always do Farmers! As for Colin, what do you say he has a supermodel in his own mind and who decided on the "Do" on Saras head she looks like a school marm, bad styling choice.

christobelle ftw, she's only 16 but is wa-hay more mature sounding and 'sure of herself' than the rest, i usually hate mature, but i'll take it with her, she reminds me of a taller, better zippora!

and some of these girls strong kiwi accents! diiiiesss, i'm looking at you lucy and mother of 2 what's her name?

Rebecca-rose need to put on more weight. She is clearly got some issues with her body image. " i have put on heaps of weight recently" she said in the first episode where did it go to ure head?

Sorry producer girl but when they put themselves out there on reality tv then they are going to be a subject for discussion blame the editing suite for giving the public the ammunition to fire with. We comment on what we see and thats what the network wants controversy equals ratings. No one forced these girls into the show. Is it really worth the Nivea bag? Probably not.

Answer to jealous industry insider-
Having known Colin for the longest time I have to say this, He really does great work "international Model" yes he does do work offshore- if you dont understand what that means. and he is a great role model for eyeliner and people of color. He also is a diva and the most unafraid person I have met in my life. Anon above-please say the comment to his face when Im around, I want to watch you die.

Isaac- here is a bit of your interview. Do you like Colin? I got the feeling you did.

Do you find in New Zealand as well that there are people who are hugely confident who shouldn't necessarily be so confident?
No no no. People should be confident. Confidence goes a long way. If you don't ask, you're last. And that's it. If people can't handle that, that's their issue and not yours. We've been reminding a few models that they must stand up and be noticed and put their hands up if they want things. I find that incredibly boring when people are so intimidated by confident people, then there's a whole lot of back biting and you confront them and they wet themselves. Which I kind of like.
