#397 Tall poppy syndrome and the NZ designer - and we wonder why all our best talent goes overseas?

Who here read the Sunday Star Times article on Jaeha's debt in the weekend? I for one was really upset, annoyed and unimpressed by it. First off, let me state quite clearly that I don't condone not paying off your debts, and I don't think it's right to go AWOL when creditors start calling. But I don't think that's what this is really about. Here we have a young designer, Alex Kim, just starting out in business. But he's not just an ordinary young designer. He's the young designer that fashion journalists have named the number one breakout designer to have come from this country in a long time. He's the young designer who has been named in the top ten finalists for the prestigious worldwide Mango Fashion Awards. And, yes, he's a young designer who has accrued a debt of $13,000 to various people around the city.

$13,000. It doesn't sound like a lot of money does it? Because it's not. Especially when there are companies like the Australian Sass and Bide who owe $500,000 to one fabric wholesaler alone. I know for a fact that there are plenty of New Zealand designers who owe a hell of a lot more than $13,000 to various creditors.

So why does Alex Kim get the article written about him?

Because in New Zealand, in Auckland particularly and especially in this microcosm of a fashion industry we have here, as soon as somebody starts doing something a little bit exciting, a little bit original, or starts becoming a little bit successful, people feel the need to cut them down.

We see it time and time again. A prime example is the ridiculous debate sparked by the post I did on Monday, entitled The Kills - dying for Meadowlark Jewellery. A New Zealand jewellery designer sold some jewellery to The Kills while they were in New Zealand for their tour. Is this celebrated? Of course not! Suddenly people are up in arms:
"oh look their also wearing Deadly ponies & company of strangers.. 'The Kills heart free Jewellery...more like!"

and
"They were actually given some deadly ponies and company of strangers also, which are possibly in the mix and were worn readily... these are shots where a photo has been taken at soundcheck and they were given meadowlark.....possibly by the photographer?? the kills did not search out meadowlark as such and were given alot of gifts when they were here oh to be a rockstar..."

or my personal favourite:
"sorry but i hardly think the kills are 'dying' for meadowlark, i actually find their designs very copied.. that anchor jamie is wearing is the same as one that was made by WHITE TRASH CHARMS a few years back and sold at karen walker. the sword alison is wearing or wore on stage is so so so similar to the one karen walker did in earlier jewellery collections, maybe meadowlark shop at karen walker? i hate copying, its always noticed by those in the know."

Lovely right? When will people understand that if one New Zealander does well, it's good for all New Zealanders? And if we created a more nurturing and encouraging environment for our creatives – rather than chopping them back down to size as soon as they start being 'too big for their boots' – perhaps some of our most creative people wouldn't run from New Zealand as soon as they're able.

I ran into Alex last night at Cassette. He was upset, embarrassed and feeling awful. He said that he accepts that it's his fault, he should have paid the debt and he takes full responsibility for it. It was a mistake, and he's owned up to it.

When will we New Zealanders start realising that this whole tall poppy syndrome bullshit is a mistake? It makes me sick.

yes isaac!!!!
this post i completely agree with and as a design student i have always felt i do not want to be a designer in new zealand just because of this!!!and why would i want to??
thankyou for having an opinion on this!!!
i mean its rediculous when some of the considered top designers of new zealand owe upwards of half a million to certain fabric wholesalers but its kept under wraps due to a 'media' relationship between certain people, why pick on such an amazing designer whos owning up to it when there are not so nice designers doing much worse???
tall poppy is whats wrong with this country...

That's so ridiculously sad! I would like to see any company or business with zero debt, its unhealthy for businesses not to have debt why should this be any different. Silly silly silly.

I guess some journalists really need to realise the difference between a story and personal circumstance - I didn't see the article - was it in a gossip page? certainly not "newsworthy" in my opinion!!

I know alex personally and i know how hard it is being a young designer trying to make your mark in this industry.
I think the story was tacky and had no real point as he had already contacted the people he owed money to. It was merely a stab at him. He is an amazing designer who i resepect and admire and its hard slog going it on your own. Its not like there is a "dummies guide to the fashion industry". We are all constantly learning and i think that this is only going to make him a stronger person ...so look out for Prince Jaeha...xx

one of your best stories yet Is. I couldn't agree more, we need to nurture success x.

yeah I love this post, Tall poppy attitude is disgusting. I haven't read the paper but who really read that paper anyway except Bridget's page? yesterday's news is tomorrow's fish&chip wrapping. Jaeha got targeted because he is THE Jaeha perhaps? I just hope he doesn't quit fashion. coz i want his dress.

I totally agree with you. This kind of attitude really makes me embarrassed to be a part of this country.

I hope as the next generation of fashion - (all things fashion orientated from design to pr to production and journos) that we decide to have an attitude that fosters TALENT.

lets kick tall poppy syndrome.

and bring some competition to our fashion industry!

Great post!

Maybe if it was 50k+ it would be story worthy. It hasn't even got to the point of debt collection as far as I read so why did it get to the papers and not in the gossip section. Did anyone notice the journalists name? Is it for real?

Alex is going to go far and NZ will only celebrate that once another country recognizes it. I'd put money on it.

Tall poppy syndrome must die, it does seem ingrained in us but we are all able to make a positive choice when faced with jealousy of another's success.

These things definitely drive kiwis away, shame on us.

Alex don't even worry, they are all dicks!

I see what your trying to get at here. But celebrating New Zealand designers, is...and SHOULD BE, very different from giving them a pat on the back everytime they do something. Although your story has credit, relating it to the response of MeadowLark jewellery is silly- as their collections are not, IN MY OPINION OF COURSE 'inspired' or 'original.' I do give them credit for producing such a successful brand, but come on people...... if this is high fashion....

Anonymous said...

MeadowLark products are well made and the quality is amazing - i know how hard those designers work and i love their brand. I would say their gold product isn't coated. it's pure gold even inside. now, THAT'S high fashion quality.

Anonymous said...

Wow there is a serious Meadowlark hater amongst us.

I bet if you had a look around, you could find the 'inspiration' behind a lot of the other NZ jewellery brands. If you were in the know that is.

Isaac, I like you.

We consider NZ to be a relatively creative and experimental hub now? Imagine the things we could do if more was done to support and reaffirm the invaluable contributions made to our creative industries.

Let us loudly pontificate our country’s success!

Fashion journalism should be trade/industry based ie: about the clothes. It’s sad that personal attacks are considered newsworthy. No one bitches about a cafes debt when doing a food review and fashion journalism should be the same, leave the financial scrutiny to the banks and moneylenders. In terms of tall poppy syndrome I agree we shouldn’t be patting people on the back just for doing SOMETHING, we need to be critical to reach a higher standard in our fashion industry, but at the same time that’s critical of the clothes not of the designers personal finances.

meadowlark design is dull and recycled.

Isaac! after getting home on wednesday night I shot off a letter to the SSS with the exact sentiment you've dislayed with this post . Wonder if many others did also? Such a pointless piece of "journalism" with such an obvious agenda - what designer, or young business owner for that matter, doesn't owe money? Particularly in this less-than-kind economic climate. Grrr.

It's just really unfair. Not cool. Not cool at all. It should be about support and not jealousy...will this nation ever change? I hope so...

All businesses carry a debt load at some point. And, $13K is not a lot of money. So, I don't see what the big deal is.

As far as Alex's designs go, while he's a nice guy, I don't really like them that much. So, whatever. But, then again, I don't like most of what the so called "big names" in NZ fashion are doing either - Karen Walker and Kate Sylvester spring to mind. Therefore, Alex is in good company. ;)

emm, i just walked passed Carlson on Ponsonby and i saw Jaeha skirts from aw09, since when is Jaeha stocking in Carlson? I thought the paper said he's not doing AW09? I guess the writer was wrong! He/she should of researched.

I found out who wrote that article. His name is Finbarr Bunting, a graduate of AUT Journalism. Interned at SST last year and he's starting to write few SST articles. I don't like his writing as his articles are too long and pointless. He is obviously new at writing news. I hope he learnt something from this.

A Stolen Girlfriends Club dress has featured on today's Fashion toast post and all the American fashionistas are drooling over it :) It was such a surprise to see it there, and to have Rumi saying this is her favourite new label!

Isaac you're absolutely right. Alex is a genius; did the fruitcake in a sea of penguins not see the scissor-hands & 2 foot long crocodile skin clutch last year?

To the meadowlark hater, since when has Karen-pick up some designs from a Parisian market, rip them off and sell them in my store-Walker been a beacon of absolute originality.

Best blog yet buddy xxxs

not hating on alex but fyi dan ahwa the stylist did the scissor gloves....

@3:40PM: I've seen all of Alex's stuff. However, just because I don't like most of it, that doesn't mean I'm a "fruitcake". *roll eyes*

alex and dan ahwa did the scissor hands together - they went to $2 shop and bought the equips and built it together. It's called collaboration! how i know this? i interviewed Alex at the backstage.

personally issac, i think you're a complete hypocrite.
you're completely guilty of doing the exact same thing you're trying to champion here and i know a lot of people that think the same - this blog is full of such examples.
i would not be surprised if you did not publish this comment as i think your blog is completely subjective to how and what you want people to perceive about you.

Well said Isaac, but it's not all bad. Here's my theory on Tall Poppy Syndrome. It's entirely unauthorised, unsolicited, and unoriginal.

And that's a lot of Un's, so you know it's good.
