#809 NYFW Day 1 Recap - it's Diggy!

Meet Diggy. He's 14 years old, rich, famous and obsessed with fashion. The son of Rev Run from Run DMC and star of MTV reality show Run's House, Diggy has his own blog where he posts daily about his favourites in fashion, architecture and style. He's even coming out with his own clothing label (rumoured to be called Space Age) in the near future. I ran into Diggy sitting in the front row at menswear show Duckie Brown this afternoon. Standing at about 5'5" and looking fresh in a preppy Kanye West/Pharrell Williams inspired outfit (dark glasses, cardigan, shirt, bow tie, raw denim jeans, white Chucks and of course Louis Vuitton monogrammed cellphone wallet), Diggy was the quintessential child star. Poised, approachable, professional and more than happy to have his photo taken. The kid could throw out a toothy grin like the best of the supermodels backstage. The only difference - those supermodels never seem to have glistening (and I mean glistening) silver braces adorning their pearly whites.

New York Fashion Week officially began today. I say 'officially' because there were a whole bunch of smaller shows and presentations yesterday (like Jenni Kayne, pictured above), but Bryant Park (IMG's onsite Fashion Week venue) opened for business at 9:00am this morning. The whole event is a juggernaut. Over 250 shows are jam packed into a hectic nine day schedule (fashion WEEK this ain't) often with several different designers showing in one hour-long time slot at different venues across the city. It's a logistical nightmare so you have to choose your battles wisely. An example: on Saturday at 4pm, Karen Walker will show at the same time as Richard Chai menswear and Project Runway winner (and the guy responsible for bringing the word ferosh into the common lexicon) Christian Siriano. I'll obviously be flying my national flag and attending Karen Walker. Today was the most relaxed of all the nine days - the proverbial begins to hit the fan on Friday.

I took relaxed to a whole new level - I made it to three of a possible 15 or so shows today. To be honest I got a bit mixed up with the onsite/offsite schedule, then I lost my paper with the addresses on it, then I went halfway around the city to an incorrect show address (not my fault!), then everything all got a bit too crazy with the big Fashion's Night Out event taking place today. Since about 4pm there have literally been parties in every single shop in this city. My favourite so far - a small store down the road from my apartment where cheerleaders and a cheer bear (I kid you not) scream at everyone who passes them by. It's like an entire citywide carnival. As I write there are grown men chanting "WE WANT FASHION! WE WANT FASHION!" on the street below. It's a good time.

Highlights of my day included - Diggy; catching a glimpse of Anna Wintour in the flesh at BCBG Max Azria (she's tiny in real life, was swamped by fans and darted out the door within five seconds of the show ending); gigantic pizza lunch with Filipino fashion blogger Bryanboy; catching up with Kiwi expat journalist Tim Blanks at Duckie Brown; and of course, the fiesta taking place everywhere I look. I made it backstage to two of my three shows, so rest assured, I'm not getting lazy, it just might take me till tomorrow to find my feet.
