#2628 Apple Pickin' With Tom Bull

My mate Tom Bull flew back into New York on Thursday after a couple of months in Sydney, and so to celebrate, on Friday we drove Upstate to an apple farm with the fine folks from Hudson Jeans and frolicked among the trees and hills and other miscellaneous countryside. As you can see, the months apart had been painful for us both, so to deal with the reunion-induced excitement we both felt but didn't want to admit to, we behaved like a couple of teenage boys and wrestled and made fun of each other and poured bags of apples over each other's heads. The moral of that story is that males never grow up. But would you have it any other way??

#2615 Primary Colours, Secondary Nature

Hey gidday mates. I catch the bus from my apartment to Union Square every day, and on my journey I pass this building on the corner of 11th Street and Avenue C, and every once in a while that building is completely painted over and within a day, the walls are covered with a brand spanking new piece of artwork. Last month it was a rastafarian lion; once it was a bunch of interlocking faces; this month it's a giant wave, probably because #surfbort. It adds a little spark of excitement to my early morning commute.

#2608 Daddy Likes Ugg Australia

On Friday last week, Jenny Albright and I, aka Daddy Likes, deejayed at the Ugg Australia Fashion Week event held at The Lincoln Center, aka NYFW HQ, and it was a good time. We've been deejaying together for a few months now, mainly at nightclubs and hotels around New York City, and our musical style can only be described as TURN DOWN FOR WHAT!? So from 4-6pm on Friday, as waiters carried around trays of tiny ice cream cones filled with tuna tartare, and chicken meatballs with truffle oil-infused aioli; and bloggers, TV stars and a steady stream of show-goers tried on the new season Ugg footwear styles; we blasted out a set that included such classics as Fantasy by Ludacris, How Do U Want It by 2Pac, Forever by Drake,, and A Mili by Lil Wayne. Plus Partition. Three times. I wore Ugg's Kolman sneakers for the event, and if you're looking for a great pair of leather low-tops that'll keep your feet warm for winter, I'd highly recommend them — they come sheepskin-lined for your walking pleasure.

#2493 How to wear a shearling jacket

Every magazine and retailer might be telling you to hop on over to your nearest store and start stocking up on spring clothing right now, but it's currently negative seven degrees (20 F) outside, it's going to be negative 15 (5 F) tomorrow, there's snow on the ground, and I think I'll stick to my cold weather gear if it's all the same. Also, since it's the end of the season, everything is going on sale, so this is the time to make your big purchases for next winter. If we take our cues from the menswear show season just gone, shearling is a good place to start. Enter Zeph Colombatto. Zeph is a photographer, model, and man about town I've known for a couple of years, and the thing that's struck me the most about him is his extreme style transformations. One day I'll see him looking razor sharp in a suit, the next he'll be dressed like a sea captain, the next is anyone's guess. He's currently in a bit of an American beat mood right now, with shaggy hair, beard, and tons of shearling. I asked him to put together a couple of looks to showcase how it's done, which Yewon Kim photographed on a freezing day in Central Park.

#2374 Les Fréres Joachim are trop cool for school

Another day, another example of the Jo' brothers absolutely killing it on the style front. I met these guys in the flesh at the AMI show in Paris, and as you'd imagine, they were equally fly IRL. I still have no idea who they are or what they do, but I'm going to endeavour to find out... Watch this space. Until then, click through to get an idea of what the two freshest identical twin brothers in all of Paris are wearing right now. Honourable mentions include: Schoolboy socks, Crockett & Jones lace-ups, all-grey-errthang, bomber jackets, giant coats, and DBs. Trop, trop, trop cool.

#2204 The Tom & Isaac Show at Park & Bond Take II – the outtakes

Photos: Rose Callahan
We were scheduled to shoot the second installment of The Tom & Isaac Show for Park & Bond at 10:00am last Friday, but Murphy intervened. By 10:30am the clothes still hadn't shown, and we were asked if we could move it to 4:00pm to allow for a courier who had no regard for the word URGENT (probably a New Zealander). 11:00am passed. Then 12:00pm, 1:30pm, 3:45pm, 4:15pm and still nothing. This posed a problem: We had our team, made up of Rose the photographer, Olivia the styling assistant and Mike the lighting guy; we had Tom walking around the apartment in a towel; and we had me beginning to panic at the thought of styling eight different outfits while running amok around Williamsburg.

#2124 The coolest kid at Gant by Michael Bastian

Photo: Greg Lewis

It takes a lot for one girl to stand out in a room filled with 40 models. Presentations aren't the easiest setting for a model to work – they've got hundreds of people staring at them, they have to stand still and look cool, and they're stuck in the same spot for an hour at a time watching the audience drinking, laughing, talking, staring, and occasionally photographing the clothes. But this young lady caught our eye today at the Gant by Michael Bastian presentation. Every time we passed by, she was just so on – posing, flirting, playing and enjoying herself. So this post is dedicated to the beautiful blonde in the red and white striped pullover and beanie. You are awesome. That is all.

#2082 What's in store at Gant Rugger – up now on The Moment

Photos: Noah Emrich of NOVH fame

Our second to last What's in store for 2011 was shot at Gant Rugger in Nolita, a shop that's swiftly becoming one of my top three in the city. First up, I've gotta give a mad shout out to Noah Emrich of NOVH fame for taking the time to shoot the photos – he had his four biggest university assignments of the year due the next day and he still made the effort to come out and get it done. What a champ. Gant Rugger was one of the easiest stores we've shot for the New York Times so far – the clothes are so similar to everything I wear on a day-to-day basis, and the space is endlessly shootable – everywhere you look there's a quirky little postcard or college flag or stack of perfectly folded sweaters. Check out the full story over on The Moment, and all the outtakes from the shoot, below. And for the record, my apologies for being so absent on the blog over the past week or so, the TV show in Wellington took up every minute of my time for five days, and organising my life to leave New York took care of the rest. More to come soon.

#2074 What's in store at Bloomingdale's – up now on The Moment

Photos: Noah Emrich of NOVH fame

I'm a bad tourist. I've been in New York for almost four months and I haven't gone up the Empire State Building, taken the ferry past the Statue of Liberty or visited Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys or Bloomingdale's. So when I arrived at Bloomingdale's with Noah Emrich of NOVH fame for our latest What's in store for the New York Times, I was more than a little daunted by its size. Bloomingdale's is a behemoth – the menswear department alone must be three or four times the size of Smith & Caughey's. Everything's bigger in America. Selecting outfits when there are literally acres of clothing to choose from was an intimidating task, but we got there in the end, with Christmas sweaters and Ovadia & Sons featuring prominently throughout. Check out the full post over on The Moment and all the outtakes below.

#2064 Noah Emrich of NOVH fame shot bloggers (including this guy) in Gant Rugger's holiday collection

Photos: Noah Emrich of NOVH fame

Another day, another blogger/brand collab – this time between my New York Times partner in crime Noah Emrich and Gant Rugger. Shot in the early hours of Friday morning at Gant Rugger's Nolita flagship store, the group included photographer Justin Chung, GQ Eye's Sean Hotchkiss, Complex writer Jian DeLeon, Julia Jacobson from NMRKT and myself (the others came later in the day). The brief was simple: Wear one piece from Gant Rugger's holiday collection alongside garments from your normal wardrobe. Noah put me in the red lambswool cardigan that I'd styled Emma Ishta in for Like the Boys the previous week, and I paired it with my R&G herringbone blazer, Uniqlo oxford button down, Crane Brothers pants and Chuck Taylors.

#2039 The facts of life

Photo: Haw-lin

1. Today in New York I have to go to the doctor for a simple prescription that's going to cost me $188 for the visit, and extra for the pills. Later, I will buy a tent from a cut-price camping store and erect it in Liberty Square. I am part of the 99%.
